Safiotra [Hybridités/Hybridities]

Foundation H, Antananarivo, Madagascar

11th April 2025 - 28th February 2026

British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare CBE RA presents his first major solo exhibition on the African continent at Foundation H in Antananarivo, Madagascar. Titled Hybridités/Hybridities, the exhibition spans over 20 years of Shonibare’s career, showcasing landmark works including The African Library (2018), part of Foundation H’s permanent collection.

The show also features pieces from the Hybrid Mask and Hybrid Sculpture series, as well as three sculptures from the Decolonised Structures series, recently presented at Shonibare’s 2024 solo exhibition at Serpentine South, London. Earlier works such as Alien Man on Flying Machine (2011) and Alien Woman on Flying Machine (2011) are also on view.

In a complementary presentation, Shonibare has curated a selection of works from Foundation H’s collection, highlighting 20 contemporary artists including Abdoulaye Konaté, Amina Agueznay, El Anatsui, Elias Sime, Ibrahim Mahama, Jems Koko Bi, Kelani Abass, Leilah Babirye, Madame Zo, Malika Agueznay, Ouattara Watts, Safaa Erruas, Virginia Chihota, Yaw Owusu, and Zanele Muholi. This curatorial dialogue reflects on the construction of African identity and history in the post-independence era.

The exhibition also marks a new partnership between Foundation H and the G.A.S. Foundation, a Nigerian non-profit founded by Shonibare in 2019. Together, they are launching a cross-residency program that connects artists and cultural practitioners between Antananarivo and Lagos.

An accompanying exhibition catalogue will be published by Foundation H in June 2025.

On view until 28 February 2026.
