To Be Free: Art and Liberty

Salisbury Cathedral, Salisbury, UK

15 May - 17 September 2023

Looking through the lens of contemporary art, To Be Free: Art and Liberty focuses on five facets of freedom: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom of expression, freedom of movement and freedom from fear. Salisbury Cathedral is home to the best-preserved remaining Magna Carta, an important historical document that limited the powers of the monarchy, established individual rights and the right to a fair trial.

Yinka Shonibare CBE's Justice for All, 2019, re-configures British sculptor F.W. Pomeroy’s Lady Justice, 1905-1906, which stands upon the dome of The Old Bailey. Instead of her habitual golden garb, Shonibare's Lady Justice is adorned in brightly coloured Dutch wax batik. In place of a head, a hand-painted globe features a map of the world, alluding to a form of universal identity.

Justice for All is featured alongside works by internationally renowned artists including Cornelia Parker CBE, Ai Weiwei, Mona Hatoum and Lucy Jones.
