Join Yinka Shonibare CBE at The Tetley where he will discuss Hibiscus Rising and the inspiration behind his practice.
Hibiscus Rising has been created in memory of David Oluwale, a British Nigerian who drowned in the River Aire on 18 April 1969 after systematic harassment by police in Leeds. Shonibare's unique artwork of a 10m tall hibiscus flower – a plant which grows all over Nigeria – is adorned in his renowned African-inspired batik patterns. The sculpture creates a joyful, peaceful space for people to come together and offers an opportunity to reflect on Oluwale’s life and imagine a more equal and inclusive future.
