Conceived by the late Okwui Enwezor and curated by Hoor Al Qasimi, Director of Sharjah Art Foundation, Sharjah Biennial 15: Thinking Historically in the Present reflects on Enwezor’s visionary work, which transformed contemporary art and established an ambitious intellectual project that has influenced the evolution of institutions and biennials around the world.
SB15 focuses on themes surrounding postcolonial subjectivity, the body as a repository of memories, processes of creolisation, hybridisation and the restitution of museumised objects.
To mark the Biennial's 30th anniversary, Yinka Shonibare CBE has been commissioned to create a series of new works which will be presented alongside works by over 30 artists including John Akomfrah, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Carolina Caycedo, Coco Fusco, Mona Hatoum, Lubaina Himid, Isaac Julien, Ibrahim Mahama, Kerry James Marshall, Steve McQueen, Philippe Parreno, Doris Salcedo and Nari Ward.
