Digital Screening of Yinka Shonibare CBE’s Films
SOUTH SOUTH FILM
21 – 24 January 2022

Shonibare’s opulently designed film productions explore the ambiguities of race, identity, class, and gender through the artist’s ‘post-colonial’ lens.
“What I find interesting is the idea that you cannot define Africa without Europe. The idea that there is some kind of dichotomy between Africa and Europe – between the ‘exotic other’ and the ‘civilized European’, if you like – I think is completely simplistic. I am interested in exploring the mythology of these two so-called separate spheres, and in creating an overlap of identities.” - Yinka Shonibare CBE.
To coincide with the digital screening, Shonibare will join curator Victor Wang, Artistic Director and Chief Curator at M WOODS Museum, Beijing, for an online discussion on the artist’s filmmaking practice. The talk will be hosted by SOUTH SOUTH on 21 January at 12:00pm (GMT). Shonibare’s films will launch Friday 21 January at 8am (GMT). All films will remain active until Monday 24 January 8am GMT.
